split and join

join() works ONLY on a list of strings.

li = ['objective=save princess leia', 'hero=luke skywalker', 'location=death star']
str = ";".join(li)
print str   # objective=save princess leia;hero=luke skywalker;location=death star

splitted = str.split(";")
print splitted   # ['objective=save princess leia', 'hero=luke skywalker', 'location=death star']
splitted = str.split(";", 1)   # number of times to split
print splitted   # ['objective=save princess leia', 'hero=luke skywalker;location=death star']

Split and join can be used to normalize a text with full of whitespaces:

str = """this   is  a
  text
with   3     lines"""
print str
# this   is  a
#   text
# with   3     lines
print str.split()
# ['this', 'is', 'a', 'text', 'with', '3', 'lines']
print " ".join(str.split())
# this is a text with 3 lines
