Why the language was renamed

The name Nimrod comes from the Biblical figure — a mighty hunter mentioned in Genesis. The language's creator, Andreas Rumpf, chose it originally, likely as a nod to the language being powerful/mighty.

It was renamed to Nim in 2014 for a rather practical reason:

In American English slang, "nimrod" has become an insult meaning a stupid or foolish person. This usage is largely traced back to a Looney Tunes cartoon (from 1948), where the hunter Elmer Fudd is sarcastically called "nimrod" (ironically referring to the great hunter), and over time audiences lost the original reference and the word drifted into general use as an insult.

So the name was causing unintended negative connotations, especially for English-speaking audiences, and Nim was chosen as a clean, short, and neutral alternative — while still being recognizably derived from the original name. Nim also happens to be the name of a classical mathematical strategy game (where players take objects from piles), which gives it a nice additional connection to logic and precision.
